Saving Rose Seeds

Saving Rose Seeds

Postby Oregon_veg » July 24th, 2008, 7:19 am

I'm considering saving rose seeds. The flowers have died back and the bulbs are forming.
When is the best time to collect seeds and is this a viable way to propagate new plants?

The seeds form in the hips many weeks after the flower dies. And as with any plant, growing from seeds is a shot in the dark if it is grown on a rootstock. If by chance it is very old before that method was commonplace, you may be saving a strain that will grow perfectly to the original.
I still think the easiest way is root cuttings. But hey, give it a try. Wait for the hips to get reddish many weeks after the flowers die. Be careful the birds don't get them first. Then break them open, dry them for about a week, and store the seeds.

Thanks Tom.
I read also that they should be picked only after a first frost. And also I need to stratify them before planting. Are these true?

I don't think this is true. I was talking to a lady at the garden center near me and she said she picks her hips and collects the seeds after the flowers die back. I guess it might depend on the type of rose.

My be true, I do think they need stratification though.
