The seeds form in the hips many weeks after the flower dies. And as with any plant, growing from seeds is a shot in the dark if it is grown on a rootstock. If by chance it is very old before that method was commonplace, you may be saving a strain that will grow perfectly to the original.
I still think the easiest way is root cuttings. But hey, give it a try. Wait for the hips to get reddish many weeks after the flowers die. Be careful the birds don't get them first. Then break them open, dry them for about a week, and store the seeds.
